Entrepreneurship is a global phenomenon:
In 29 surveyed countries, slightly less than10% of the population were creating and growing new businesses. This translates to 150 million people engaged in some form of entrepreneurial activity at any one time.
Per Capita, AUSTRALIA is a Leading Entrepreneurial Country:
Of the 29 countries surveyed, both per country and per region (per capita) Australia was third highest in entrepreneurial activity behind only Mexico and New Zealand.
However, Australia is second only to New Zealand when it comes to opportunity-based entrepreneurial activity.
Opportunity rather than necessity motivates 77% of Australian entrepreneurs - a very high proportion.
Necessity-based entrepreneurial activity brought Australia down to eighth position (NZ 10th) in the same survey.
Entrepreneurial Activity by Gender and Age:
Including all 29 surveyed countries, the most entrepreneurial activity overall was being undertaken by men aged 25 - 34 years. For women it was the 35 - 44 year age group.
The two major patterns that have been emphatically confirmed in a variety of other studies are;
- men are more than twice as active in entrepreneurship as women; and
- 24-44 year olds represent the most active age group.
