IT Council calls for Supportive Framework
The IT Council of SA has weighed in to the debate over the State’s economic future with a forthright declaration that in spite of official reluctance to ‘pick winners’ some sectors deserve support.
Food, motor vehicle production and the State’s ICT industry were not only growing but already making major contributions to our economy and deserved to be optimised.
“The ICT industry in South Australia supports up to 30,000 jobs and contributes around $5bn per annum to the economy,” The IT Council states in a submission to the Economic Development Board.
“ICT is a growth industry that offers high value challenging employment and is (largely) distance independent with the potential to attract and retain our best and brightest students.”
IT Council chairman, Phil Ingerson was a key participant at the recent Economic Growth Summit convened by the Office of Economic Development.
“Numerous issues and points related to ICT, which I found most heartening,” Phil says.
These included:
- The ICT industry being viewed as an “enabler” for the change that must occur in South Australia in terms of making the changes that are needed.
- ICT being seen as a major growth industry in its own right.
