The Importance of Capturing the Knowledge of Departing Employees

Helping an organisation retain hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of vital knowledge stored in its senior employees’ heads is very satisfying to Patrick Mangan, who uses his two part ‘knowledge capture’ and ‘knowledge release’ approach to achieve this.
This article addresses the ‘knowledge capture’ part of the process. The ‘knowledge release’ will be covered in a later edition of ‘in—business’.
The knowledge to be captured is what a manager or employee takes when they walk out the door of their organisation for the last time. Such knowledge may include start up processes, team selection tips, evaluation and reporting processes, organisational knowledge, implementation strategies and personnel insights.
