Tall Poppy Science Awards
These Tall Poppies are not for cutting. When the next round of Tall Poppies in Science awards are announced in July 2004 a new program of events and activities will take the State’s scientific leaders to the people in new and different ways.
The Tall Poppy in Science Awards have been held in every Australian State since 1999 to recognise the achievements of outstanding young researchers. The awards promote their winners’ work within their home state during a busy, year—long calendar of events.
The Tall Poppies act not only as role models for students and teachers by promoting and encouraging an interest in careers in science, engineering and medicine, but also as ambassadors for their institutions.
The idea is, in short, to remind bright kids, who will be the skilled workers of the future, that science is cool. The Tall Poppies will describe their rewarding and creative careers and dispel the notion that scientists are remote and unapproachable.
Since 1999, South Australian Tall Poppies have generated much goodwill by giving up their time (and that of their institutions) to travel to regional and rural areas to talk to students and teachers about their work. For the first time this year, this activity will be structured in a program of events.
