Staying in Contact
Way back at the turn of the century, contact centres were the next big thing to hit town, apparently growing like topsy as operators realised the potential of Adelaide’s low operating costs.
The noise has died down, but that’s not because it has stopped, says Wendy Perry of Wendy Perry and Associates. Wendy participated in the boom and says activity has just gone indoors a bit.
“At the local level, the industry has been growing in a different way,” Wendy says.
Several years ago, contact centre growth appeared to be booming. New facilities sprang up regularly, giving the impression (fostered by government) that openings equalled growth.
“Lately there has been far more growth within contact centres, such as EDS, Westpac, Telstra and Optus.
“Things have ‘gone quiet’ but there are still more than 160 call centres in SA.”
