The world in a box
A successful and practical innovator, John Oakes of Kioskworld has a small problem. He doesn’t like the name of what he makes.
Kioskworld’s equipment, recently commissioned in a prominent SA museum, is showing the way for a new approach to information distribution at strategic points.
But John says the concept of a kiosk applies more to a retail sales point – John would rather call his new units an interactive multimedia terminal.
"It’s basically a computer with an ADSL modem and software," John says. "The content can be updated remotely – the designer can update from home over the Internet as though it was a website."
Kioskworld is primarily concerned with hardware systems design but does some software work as well. Systems professionals will understand the very complicated problem of making an open-access computer system bulletproof.
