The Arab dhow may be one of the world’s oldest vehicles, but don't expect Sinbad to step out of one nowadays. These simple but effective trading ships still carry goods from the Arabian Gulf’s busiest ports, distributing them along ancient trade routes linked to markets totalling some 2 billion people in Africa and western Asia.
“The dhows carry anything up to motor cars in size,” says Anil Thayuman, the Business Development Manager at South Australia’s newest trade outpost, at Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The new team in Dubai — Anil, his chief Nicholas Alister-Jones and his colleague, Adelaide native, Karen Maadad — are still exploring the territory.

Anil has spent over 12 years as a sales and marketing manager in the Middle East, where he was employed first by the largest trading group in the UAE and later by a Fortune 500 multinational before joining the SA team which is headed by Nicholas Alister-Jones (Director), who has over 23 years experience in the region. Prior to this appointment, Alister-Jones was Regional Manager (Middle East) for Icon Group Services and served as Resident Director of the British Arabian Technical Co-operation (BATC) in Saudi Arabia.
