disAbility: good for business
This year, Malcolm Bedson, owner of Hindmarsh-based wholesaler Green Steel Supplies, discovered an unexpected formula for success.
Looking for a way to improve business, Malcolm evaluated his recruitment choices and decided to also consider people with a disability when making changes to his workforce.
"It’s a decision that’s reaping rewards!" he says.
Malcolm has right to be excited: people with a disability are often more productive, dependable and safer in the workplace than their ‘abled’ peers. They also take fewer sick days and stay in the job longer.
Malcolm’s first experience of working with an employee with a disability came about when he was contacted by CRS Australia, a national organisation who help people with a disability, injury or health condition to get or keep work.
