Electronics thinks outside the square
Announcing the launch of the Electronics Industry Education Initiative (ei)2, EIA Executive Director, Jason Kuchel said the initiative was the industry’s response to its discovery two years ago that South Australia couldn't fill all the electronics jobs and that a creative solution was needed.
For the past two years Industry Leaders and EIA staff have been busy creating the range of services and infrastructure that will be available through (ei)2.
"Probably the flagship (ei)2 service is an initiative that involves final-year engineering students being able to study some electives at other university campuses. This flexible study option is an Australian first, and gives access to areas of expertise at all three world class South Australian universities," Jason says.
David Wilkinson, project manager for (ei)2 says another key service is bringing much-needed guidance, insight and understanding to new employees and students in the electronics field.
The (ei)2 Mentoring Program links students and industry employees together to foster a wider and more in-depth understanding of the electronics industry. For employers it is also an ideal opportunity to shape future employees and introduce them early to business life.
"Many people don't realise that there are more than 400 electronics companies in South Australia and that 8,900 people are employed. This is more than twice the amount that the wine industry employs," Jason says.
