Great South Australians
Each year SA Great, through its South Australian and Young South Australian of the Year and SA Great Awards, recognises and profiles South Australians who have made a significant contribution to this state.
Sister Janet Mead was announced as this year’s winner of the prestigious SA Great South Australian of the Year Award.
Sister Janet Mead was presented with the award by Her Excellency the Governor, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson AC, CVO, MBE at an official luncheon held in the grounds of Partridge House at Glenelg as part of Proclamation Day celebrations on Tuesday, December 28, 2004.
A Sister of Mercy, Sister Janet Mead, is a founder and Chairperson of the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Persons. Since opening in 1985, the Centre has assisted hundreds of South Australians.
"Sister Janet Mead is recognised for her lifetime dedication of work to the most needy people in our community," said Mr Mark Bickley, SA Great Chair.
"She is an inspiration to many South Australians for her tireless work and her compassion for the plight of our homeless people," said Mark.
Sister Janet Mead is recognised for her significant contribution to South Australia and also for her leadership and mentoring, not only in South Australia, but also outside the state.
The Governor also presented SA Great’s inaugural Young South Australian of the Year Award to Dr Erin Symonds. Erin is a doctor of philosophy in physiology and is employed at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital in the Gastroenterology Department as a medical scientist/clinical trials
co-ordinator. She is acknowledged for her academic achievements, significant contribution to the community through her research, and also for her mentoring of students.
