Rudd plan for APEC and China
Should Federal Labor win government at the next general election, Opposition hard man Kevin Rudd is virtually certain to be one of its senior ministers.
While Opposition Leader Beazley’s shadow minister for foreign affairs and international security has world-stage issues as his primary responsibility, another commands almost as much of his attention — trading with the emerging Chinese commercial behemoth.
This is something Kevin Rudd has a very useful perspective on — and the varied political experience to guide him. He has had a long and distinguished academic, business and political career with a strong China focus.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies with First Class Honours from the Australian National University and in 1981 was appointed to the Australia Department of Foreign Affairs. He served in the Australian Embassies in Stockholm and later in Beijing as First Secretary.
Between 1988 and 1995 he worked in the Queensland Government including as Director General of the Cabinet Office. During this time he was appointed by Prime Minister Keating and the Premiers to chair an inter-government committee to develop a National Asian Language Studies Strategy for Australian Schools.
In 1998 he was elected to the Parliament of Australia and appointed to Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2001 and in 2003 given the added responsibility of International Security.
