Boom coming thanks to no-toll Port bridges
The SA Freight Council has claimed the local economy is "on the verge of a new era of prosperity, with unprecedented access to the major export markets of the world" thanks to the decision not to impose a toll on the Port River Expressway.
"The Council welcomes with substantial relief, the decision not to introduce a toll for users of the opening bridges," SA Freight Council General Manager, Neil Murphy says.
"To have imposed a toll for freight access on this route would not only have been counter-productive to all plans to make SA more export competitive, but it would have sent the State back into the dark ages for funding relevant infrastructure projects.
"It would also have mitigated against any argument for whether the bridges are fixed or opening, as freight forwarders would simply bypass the port for other more cost competitive options."
Mr Murphy called on the State Government to accelerate construction of the bridges as soon as possible, to ensure that valuable freight moves – by road and rail - as efficiently and effectively as possible to and from Outer Harbor.
SA Freight Council Chairman, Vincent Tremaine, also says the State Government’s Strategic Infrastructure Plan would be a key to catapulting the State "up the freight transport competition ladder" adding the the Council is pleased that its "Top Six" priority projects had been addressed, in some way, by the Government.
