SolutionCity talks talent
The recent SolutionCity Innovation Showcase at the Hilton Adelaide brought together IT students, universities and companies to network and plot ways forward for the state’s small but dynamic ITC sector.
The event featured a panel discussion involving Kate Francis (IT Security consultant with Vectra Corporation); David Nye (head of TV production company, Brave Vision); Dr Simon Ronald(speed reading software, RocketReader); Marty Gauvin (head of Australia’s most successful listed internet company, Hostworks); Sean Heylen (head of web development agency, Deadline Media); David Evans (innovative solutions for music with Digital Monkey); and Karyn Lanthois (creative director of entertainment and mobile solutions company, Kukan Studio).
Karyn’s firm, which is on the leading edge of software development for new-generation mobile phone information services, has a strong interest in developing SA’s IT skills base.
From her illustration below, it’s clear the skills required are diverse and not necessarily transferrable to other areas in the same sector.
“The work that we do — J2ME, Symbian and Brew development for mobile devices — is quite specialised,” Karyn says.
“We are doing all we can currently to ensure we have a good pool of skilled people to choose from.
“When developing games and graphics for handheld devices, there are demands on the graphic artist to capture expression and action in small dimensions...
