Coles hub adds to Salisbury surge
Coles Myer’s move to establish a new $125 million, 64,725 square metre distribution centre at Edinburgh Parks capped an extraordinary year for the City of Salisbury.
The centre, developed by Coles Myer contractor Macquarie Goodman on a 20-year lease and set to employing more than 400 people, was only the latest of a string of commitments that far exceeded the city’s estimates for commercial development.
Salisbury mayor Tony Zappia said Coles Myer had investigated a number of locations for the site, choosing Salisbury “essentially because of its commercial and industrial advantages and its logistical position as a transport hub”.
“These include competitive costs, skills and logistical advantages with outstanding environmental practices and a Council that is committed to getting things done quickly for business,” Mr Zappia said.
The Coles Myer milestone eclipsed $6 million Woolworths development at Burton also approved recently.
Salisbury CEO Stephen Hains said his team had been “surprised and delighted” by the result. Acknowledging that favourable economic conditions globally were driving the rash of development, but that Salisbury’s positioning was paying dividends as business chose to base there.
And the city’s commitment to handle development proposals promptly added to strategic advantages.
