Tsunami rebuilding program
The Asian earthquake and tsunamis have been one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern times causing significant damage to physical infrastructure. Preliminary damage assessments by various aid agencies estimate it could take five to 10 years to rebuild services, basic amenities and support infrastructures. Reconstruction will involve collaboration between governments, aid agencies and private organisations to target communities with long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction programs. The Department of Trade and Economic Development Tsunami Reconstruction Program has been set up to assist SA businesses focus on opportunities arising from the federal assistance package of $2 billion for the total development of Indonesia. DTED is planning a further market awareness mission to Indonesia in November 2005 to help businesses assess the trade opportunities available and to meet with key stakeholders.
