Great South Australians
Each year SA Great, through its South Australian and Young South Australian of the Year and SA Great Awards, recognises and profiles South Australians who have made a significant contribution to this state.
Professor Denise Bradley AO was announced as the 2005 winner of the prestigious South Australian of the Year Award and 23 year old Heidi Bartram was awarded the Young South Australian of the Year.
They were presented with their awards by Her Excellency the Governor, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson AC, CVO, MBE at the SA Great Awards official luncheon held as part of Proclamation Day celebrations, on Wednesday, December 28, 2005.
Following last year's winners Sister Janet Mead and Dr Erin Symonds, SA Great is pleased that the top two Awards had been scooped by two equally wonderful women.
As the Vice Chancellor and President of the University of South Australia since 1997, Professor Denise Bradley AO has led the university through a period of rapid change to become a significant contributor to the South Australian economy. UniSA is now the largest University in the state, is a major provider and exporter of education programs and a leader in applied research, contributing to South Australia's income and employment generation, social and cultural development and wealth creation.
One of Professor Bradley's most notable contributions to the state has been the strategic development of UniSA as an exporter of education. The university's international student numbers have grown from 1,358 in 1996 to 10,018 in 2005 - over a sevenfold increase (or 638%) in less than a decade, making it the largest provider of offshore education in Australia for three years (2002-2004).
