PRE-PAY PAYS OFF
Petrol stations participating in a petrol pre-pay trial conducted by the Motor Trade Association (MTA) of South Australia saw their petrol theft rates drop by half. The 72 stations reported not only fewer drive-offs, but zero instances of customers filling up, then claiming they couldn’t pay. Most stations in the trial switched to pre-pay after nightfall, the prime time for drive-offs. Non-participating servos reported a sharp rise in theft rates. MTA Deputy Executive Director, Dennis Boldock expects pre-pay to become commonplace as petrol retailers resolve nagging software issues.
COONAWARRA REDEFINED
Coonawarra, the gold-plated wine region in SA’s south east, was formally redefined after protracted wrangling before the Administrative Affairs Tribunal. Forty five winemaking concerns sought to be included in the appellation; 24 succeeded, and their products now may wear Australia’s most prestigious regional designation. Appellation distinctions are vital elements of wine marketing abroad, and a legal necessity in Europe.
