McMahon cleans up
The company, which ranked XX in the SA Top 100 Company Index in 2006, has been able to establish new interstate bases for handling major maritime and civil projects on the strength of its environmental engineering expertise.
That emerging emphasis was recognised in April when McMahon Services received a Case Earth Award, in partnership with the Land Management Corporation and Golder Associates, for their involvement in the Port Adelaide Redevelopment project.
McMahon's task of clearing the 30 hectare first precinct and make ready for development was complicated by a difficult location surrounded by a school, a childcare centre, housing and the Port River. An aboriginal heritage exclusion zone was right in the middle of the site.
The firm excavated, sorted, processed and backfilled about 80,000 cubic metres of material without compromising the environmental integrity of the site. They also finished on time, even though the contract value increased by 30% with changes to the scope of work.
Throughout the project great lengths were taken to monitor environment impacts and ensure adverse effects were minimised. This included observing weather conditions with the help of an on-site weather station, monitoring dust, odour and noise generation, checking pH levels of excavated materials and monitoring groundwater.
