IBWshuns danger of the comfort zone
International Business Week 2007 will throw down a challenge to South Australian businesses to step outside their “comfort zone” by embracing international trade.
The two-week festival of export ideas, running August 6-17, opens up the world of import and export opportunities by putting experience-rich events within the reach of both city and regional businesses. More than 2000 people are expected to attend seminars at locations throughout metropolitan Adelaide and as far afield as Murray Bridge, Kadina, Laura and Port Augusta.
Under the IBW umbrella, business organisations and groups are hosting more than 40 events that offer everything from up-to-date information about major export markets like the US, China and India to tested market-entry strategies and “war stories” from successful exporters.
International Business Week, sponsored by UniSA and supported by Austrade, is South Australia's premier event for exporters and for companies considering the leap from domestic to world markets.
Austrade SA manager Chris Rees said IBW challenged businesses with the opportunities offered by international trade. “It raises the awareness of export opportunities and provides would-be exporters with access to information and people who can offer services,” he said.
“It also puts people who help exporters in touch with each other so they can offer exporters a single export platform. Compared to five years ago, people now work in a much more collegiate fashion, utilising their strengths in certain areas rather than being a one-stop shop.
“For those of us in the organising group, IBW provides a chance for us to sit back and look at how this state does its exports. It makes us take a holistic view, focus on the issues and identify some of the gaps. International Business Week is an opportunity to fill those gaps.”
