SA puts the byte on export figures
SA’s information and communications technology sector is pinched for staff but is growing relentlessly, according to Michael O’Neill, Director of the SA Centre for Economic Studies.
The ICT Council of SA commissioned the centre to conduct a survey of local ICT firms to determine how much export business was being done. Previous ICT Export surveys took place in 2001 and 2004.
The ‘in-business’ Fast Movers SA 2007 index released in this issue bears out the sector’s strength. One third of the Fast Movers are technology companies.
Prof O’Neill found ability to compete at global level is very important in the sector and the fact 55% of current ICT workers have university or other tertiary qualifications has serious implications for workforce planning as the sector expands.
The great majority of ICT firms are SMEs, with 77% of them employing less than 20 people and many sole traders. About 21,500 people work in the sector.
