Mitsubishi’s massive delivery
P&O Ports loaded the biggest single shipment of Mitsubishi cars for export at Outer Harbor in Adelaide just before Christmas. The car carrier Fuji loaded 2,600 Diamante sedans enroute to the USA. The shipment brings to 17,000 the total number of Adelaide manufactured cars to be sold into the North American market last year. Mitsubishi attributes the export surge to high market acceptance of the new Diamante model. “Early in the year, an average of 900 to 1,000 cars a month were loaded,” says P&O Ports National Vehicle Logistics Manager, Dean Wells. “This built steadily over the last half of the year, reaching 2,100 in November.” The Fuji took three days to load. “We drove five cars aboard at a time, every four minutes,” Dean says. “Every car was then lashed down to ensure absolute security in even the roughest seas enroute.”
ACTA events magnet
The Adelaide Convention and Tourism Authority secured a further 32 events for the State in the 2000/2001 financial year. These include the 15th Biennial Conference of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children in 2003, the 43rd World Congress of Surgery in 2009 and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Conference in 2002. Chief Executive Martin Winter said the events won by ACTA in 2000/2001 would inject over $86 million into the State’s economy. “The conferences, meetings and exhibitions we’ve secured for South Australia will generate around 19,000 visitors and 110,800 bed nights,” Mr Winter said. He expected this year to be a tougher sell, however, as eastern states competed more strongly with SA in the travel-shy environment prevailing after 11 September.
