Port Bonython to break bottleneck
Bottlenecks at ports slowed down Australia’s iron ore exports and significantly hampered growth in the December 2007 quarter, according to financial media outlet, Bloomberg.
Well aware of the problem, four SA iron miners have formed an umbrella organisation, the Port Bonython Bulk Users Group, to develop a shared export facility at Port Bonython north of Whyalla on
Spencer Gulf.
Collaborating miners Centrex Metals, IMX Resources, Ironclad Mining and Western Plains Resources believe the anticipated export volumes of up to 8-10 mtpa capacity by 2010, and up to about 20 mtpa by 2015, are “conservative”.
The group believes no other SA site offers both deep water access and easy connection to the standard gauge rail network.
“The time to develop the port is now; there is no need to wait for a decision on the possible Olympic Dam expansion which could be many years in the future,” group chair, Bob Duffin said in the announcement statement.
