David Hassell steps down
Adelaide architectural dynasty Hassell marks another milestone in June when David Hassell formally retires from the international firm that bears his name.
Hassell was founded in 1938 from Colin Hassell’s King William St office. After overseas travel David joined the firm in 1972 as a junior architect.
“My timing was good, coming home to the office when we were busy with the Festival Centre,” David says.
After two years working in London, David was impressed at Adelaide’s high standard of building design and he believes design excellence made Hassell’s amazing expansion possible.
As he grew in seniority David says the pressing problem was covering down-turns in major building. Hassell does little residential work and slumps caused serious staffing problem not easily fixed when the economy revived.
