by Mr Shayne Bakewell
Australian Fair Pay Commission Decision –
Effective First Pay Period on or after 1 October 2008
The Decision
The Australian Fair Pay Commission has, in its third minimum wage decision, awarded a $21.66 per week increase to those employees on the minimum wage and the those employees subject to the Australian Pay and Classification Scales.
The decision brings the new Federal minimum
wage to:
•$543.78 per week (up from $522.12), or
•$14.31 per hour (up from $13.74).
This decision comes into effect from the first pay period on or after 1 October 2008.
It’s understood there will be only one more minimum wage-fixing decision by the Australian Fair Pay Commission, in 2009, as the wage-fixing responsibility thereafter will be taken over by the Federal Government’s proposed new institution, Fair Work Australia.
