China’s sommelier offers challenge
The race is on to develop China’s wine trade and Hong Kong Financial Secretary, John Tsang, who toured SA recently, said Hong Kong is keen to help Australian
winemakers get ahead. French wine is making the early running. International auction house Acker Merrall & Condit held its first Hong Kong auction at Winexpo in May. A case of DRC Romanée-Conti 1990 sold for a world record $US242,308 and total turnover, $8.2 million, made it the richest Asian wine auction ever. French winemakers were surprised Australian winemakers were not prominent at Vinexpo.
Mr Tsang noted profile was a “challenge” for Australian winemakers who needed to market themselves with history and “heroes of regions” to give our wine the recognition it deserves.
He says Hong Kong strategy is to provide an “intermediary cadre” of wine ambassadors – sommeliers and hospitality agents who can promote wine appreciation among mainland Chinese.
