Going mobile
m.Net was set up in 2001 to develop mobile broadband applications and broke through in early 2002 with the first 3G network in the Southern Hemisphere, commissioned for the 2002 IT World Congress in Adelaide.
By October 2002 m.Net’s wireless WAN became operational across Adelaide.
The firm attracted Seven Group investment in August 2005 and by May 2006 had become preferred supplier of mobile services to Yahoo 7.
In May 2007 m.Net signed a three-year agreement as the preferred supplier of IT and systems integration services to Telstra, which set the stage for a coup when the firm created and delivered, as part of Telstra’s sponsorship of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, one of the most successful mobile sites in Australian telecommunications history.
“Our clients include major media organisations, telecommunications carriers and their advertising clients,” says MD, Horden Wiltshire.
“The launch of the iPhone has set a new benchmark in terms of user interface design and has changed peoples’ perception of the level of service sophistication that can be delivered to your phone.
“The user experience across all handsets is improving in leaps and bounds, data pricing continues to come down and there are now more people in Australia with a 3G phone than with terrestrial broadband.
“Last year more than 40% of Australian’s had visited a mobile website and this penetration continues to grow.
In five years’ time every major and medium-sized business with a web presence will also have a mobile site customised for their clients browsing on mobile devices.
“Our success in this market is based on the enthusiasm and professionalism of our experienced team and the innovative technology platforms created by our smart people.
The greatest challenge at the moment is market education.
