New water strategy

The diverse mix of water security solutions we are evolving can bring global leadership to Adelaide, according to water expert Professor Mike Young.
Deeply experienced in the field, Prof Young has been Research Chair, Water Economics and Management at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, The University of Adelaide since 2006. His role is to help develop the water industry and facilitating reallocation of water permits in the River Murray.
While applauding the recent desalination plant initiative, Prof Young doesn’t expect it will end water supply problems for some time.
“Desalination is still a long way off giving Adelaide access to more water,” Prof Young says.
“We still have to have restrictions, particularly as last few months have been so dry.”
“I think desalination will be part of a wider mix of policies to achieve water security through a broad diversification of sources,” he says.
