Awards help validate innovation
The ability to commercialise research and adapt to changing circumstances are the cornerstones of Dr Leanna Read’s ongoing success as CEO and MD of innovative Adelaide biotechnology company, TGR BioSciences Pty Ltd.
Dr Read founded TGR to develop high value health products from food by-products but found the recent economic crisis required the company to rethink its short term strategy, with outstanding global success.
“I always knew that a key to the success of the business would be getting products to market quickly, so when the financial crisis hit we started to market the assay kits we had been using as part of our product development,” Dr Read says.
“We felt this was a reasonably low-risk strategy to provide cashflow to ride out the current environment. We now have 40 kits on the market with clients that include most of the major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies worldwide.
“This has meant TGR is bringing a growing revenue stream into SA that is already several millions of dollars per annum.”
Before establishing TGR Dr Read gained valuable experience and skills as CEO of the commercially successful Cooperative Research Centre for Tissue Growth and Repair.
“I have always had a strong interest in applying science and the CRC offered a unique opportunity to do this as well as provide a training ground to learn skills that were not around at the time,” she says.
