Jolly green giant
In March, Top 100 SA Company Finsbury Greencelebrated 36 years in business. The prominent SA-based printing house, which early this century expanded by acquisition to Melbourne, has become significant on the national stage.
Change has been a constant since the family company’s MD, Peter Orel, made sustainability part of the company name. The company was rebranded in 2007 but the movement began well before ‘green’commitment was more than philanthropy in mainstream business.
Peter is careful to distinguish ‘green’ affectation from real sustainability, telling the print industry press he is “no tree-hugger”. Finsbury Green now recycles 97% of the material it uses to make print products and has made sustainability a business advantage.
In February, a national training initiative trained all staff in Lean Manufacturing, which aims to minimise waste throughout production.
In September 2008 Finsbury was recertified nationally for Quality and Environment for another three years after being the first print company nationally to have the simultaneous certifications awarded three years ago.
Other changes have emphasised capability building. In January the firm’s first Akiyama Mega Jprint 12 colour press was installed at the Melbourne plant. In August 2008 a Mega Akiyama Jprint 10 colour went into the Adelaide plant along with ink pumps. In March, an Accoro Binding Line dramatically increased Adelaide’s capability.
In August last year at the SA PICA Awards for print industry excellence Finsbury Green won the Best Overall SA Production award along with nine gold, six silver and three bronze awards.
Finsbury Green Solutions is an environmental print management company delivering end-to-end solutions to corporates. After researching customer requirements Finsbury built a business model based on three major points of difference: sustainability, customer centricity and flexibility.
