America will revive - Olsen
Former SA Premier, John Olsen recently returned from a long stint promoting Australian trade in the USA. His reading of the American markets spans the global financial crisis, which he has observed from the vantage point of the G’Day USA trade exhibitions in 2008 and earlier this year. While the USA’s economy is not healthy, Mr Olsen says it remains a potent marketplace with unsurpassed appetite for goods.
“The US is the World’s largest economy, importer and investor,” he points out. “It is a market that despite the GFC will reinvent itself, continue to be the largest consumer market and therefore be a target market for Australian goods and services.”
Export to North America is not simple and he says Australian exporters need to be “lean and hungry and smart about global opportunities”.
“We have in excess of 8000 SMEs in the US market which is competitive, fragmented and complicated,” Mr Olsen says.
