South Australian water industry has ‘edge’
With water becoming a precious commodity worldwide during the 21st century, South Australia’s growing expertise in filtration technology could lead to serious export success, according to eminent water researcher, Paul Dalby.
Dr. Dalby of the University of Adelaide, who also consults for the collaborative International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management, says a recent research forum shows filtration advances are building worldleading practical expertise.
“There are several areas where research could improve the cost-effectiveness of membrane filters in the water industry,” Paul says.
“There are only a small number of reverse osmosis filter manufacturers in the world so by creating new capability in membrane manufacturing, Australia could develop a valuable export industry and help drive down the cost of membranes through increased competition. The public research sector has a significant role to play in developing this capability in Australia.”
Another profitable research area is to find ways to keep membranes clean.
“Filter membranes often have to be replaced because they are clogged, not worn out.
There is definitely a market for improved membrane pre-treatment to prevent fouling and improved cleaning methods to help extend the life of membranes,” Paul says.
“In the longer term, we need to create new types of filters that can remove salt from water at much lower energy costs. There are also several...
