Yellow Corp diversifies to grow
If diversification is one of the keys to success in tough economic times, SA transport enterprise Yellow Corporation is well placed to weather the storm of the global financial crisis.
While still embracing its 85-year history in the taxicab industry, Yellow Corporation is diversifying itself into a multidimensional business offering a range of services including transport, warehousing and distribution, security and voice and data communications.
Owner and MD, Ron Barton says there’s always a risk with expansion, but says the best protection is understanding the consequences of that risk.
“You might flip a few cards off the top of the deck from time to time, but you never make a decision that could bring the whole deck down,” he says.
Yellow’s expansion into new markets has been a 20-year journey, with Yellow Couriers and Yellow Taxi Trucks brought into the fold in the mid 1980s. In the 90s Yellow diversified into warehousing, distribution and interstate haulage through Aussiefast Transport Solutions. Consolidated Security Services was added in 2000 and Consolidated Data Communications in 2005.
Both the cab and courier divisions at Yellow Corporation have updated the technology used in all fleet vehicles. The courier new portable data terminals have been in operation since September 2008.
