Felicity relishes rewarding journey
Felicity Van Der Heul calls the Young Business Leaders program “a tough, but exciting and rewarding journey” which gained her valuable skills she could apply in her work with the City of Tea Tree Gully.
“I entered the program to develop myself professionally and gain the Certificate IV in Frontline Management,” Felicity says. “I also saw the program as a worthwhile opportunity to contribute to raising money for a deserving charity such as The Royal Society for the Blind.
“Although I set out to obtain professional development through the program, along the way I also developed personally. I learned how to be open to new ideas and experiences and how to turn challenges into positive opportunities.”
Exploring her personal leadership abilities has been a bonus.
“Through working with other YBL participants I had the opportunity to lead and be led as part of project teams. I learned that even through solid planning not everything will go to plan, but as a leader it is my responsibility to make sure the goals are achieved. All situations should be viewed as a continual learning experience.”
Felicity packed amazing variety into her YBL experience, organising activities as diverse as an office recycling system, a Krispy Kreme drive, a world whisky tasting event and the major Celebrating Vision event featuring extreme adventurer, Duncan Chessell.
“My Community Involvement Project consisted of a variety of small to large fundraising projects, which I divided in to two main categories – the minor and the major,” she says.
“The minor activities could be implemented quickly and gave me the opportunity to take the lead in planning and implementating them. They also gave me an immediate sense of achievement and determination to continue fundraising.
