Networking: it’s personal

Let me make it clear from the outset that I am a fan of LinkedIn. I use it every day, have a clear strategy for maximising its effectiveness and constantly look for opportunities to add value to and for my contacts.
However, social media only forms part of my approach to networking and relationship management.
Is it just me, or is there an increasing tendency for people to use platforms such as LinkedIn as their networking panacea or crutch? I’m concerned that our networking success is being measured by our number of ‘connections’, rather than qualitative issues, such as strength of relationships, real-time contact and historical reference points.
The increasing focus on the benefits of social media seems to have us networking more from our office desks and phones, rather than face to face. Well, it’s time to extricate yourself from your office, and revive the art of face-to-face networking.
I’m not advocating for a weekly 1980s style long lunch but you do need to personally engage with your network - employers, employees, stakeholders, business associates - to maintain relevance and support your presence.
This is particularly important when considering your inner circle, or your prioritised and most trusted contacts.
