AMEC Handles Holistic Risk
AMEC is a leading international provider of specialised services and engineering solutions for clients in manufacturing, infrastructure and process industries. Headquartered in the UK, it is one of the largest engineering design firms in the world, providing a range of services to a worldwide client base in the manufacturing and processing, mining, power, oil and gas, water and telecommunications industries.
With some 50,000 employees worldwide, AMEC has a significant presence in the Asia Pacific region with operations in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Phillipines and Japan. The regional business has a turnover of around US$250 million and employs around 1,000 people.
Annual turnover in Australia is about A$120 million, involving about 500 employees. There are major offices in Perth and Sydney as well as regional offices established to service their local industrial areas. The Australian head office is in Adelaide and AMEC is one of the largest firms of its type to be based in South Australia.
AMEC’s client list is impressive. Alcoa contracts AMEC to monitor operations at its huge Alumina Australia sites in WA, the largest sources of alumina in the world. For the Japanese National Aerospace Laboratory trials of its new supersonic transport technology at Woomera, AMEC was contracted to provide mechanical, electrical and communications services to spaceflight quality levels.
The world-class systems and best practice processes needed to accomplish these jobs stream through the Adelaide office as project workers interact with AMEC’s global network — now regulated by a total risk management (TRM) system rolled out this year.
AMEC has been an innovator in project delivery methods, including alliancing and private finance projects. Innovative client partnerships, long-term service relationships and full 'life of asset' support capability streamline project delivery and cost.
